Preschoolers cannot be confined to Halloween for costumes.

Last week at school there was a Valentine’s Day Tea. The children wore their parents’ clothes, and attempted to act refined. I lobbied for H to wear Mark’s tuxedo, but I was vetoed. Something about the tux being an heirloom and once belonging to Mark’s grandfather.

We settled on a button down and an old tie.

Thumbs up for wearing a tie.

This week, we celebrated Western Day. We were asked not to go out and buy costumes; we were told to improvise. This is Texas, after all. We all have a few items in our homes that will work for Western Day.

While we do own a play cowboy hat and a pair of boots, we did not have any other cowboy paraphernalia. I know that may sound odd, at least for native Texans. Up until now, though, H hasn’t shown a lot of interest in cowboys. Our dress-up bin is full of pirate and dragon gear, with a bit of construction worker thrown in. Thus far, we have not expanded to include outfits for the rest of the Village People.

To offset our lack of western wear, Mark suggested we make a belt buckle. Pure genius. Every so often he has a great idea, but don’t tell him I said so. That would upset the balance of power around here.

What do you think? We believe I could go into the Aluminum Foil & Sharpie Belt Buckle business.

By the way, our play cowboy hat was re-purposed for last year’s school Easter parade. It looked like this:

We took off all of the doodads for Western Day. But some shiny glue spots remained. H said that was okay, because Cowboy hats are not supposed to be perfect.

And this is why I don’t usually do Wordless Wednesday. I blather.

I wonder…

:: Do your kids play dress-up? What is their favorite costume?

:: I panic a little every time a note comes home from school letting me know a costume is needed. Do you enjoy putting together costumes or does it stress you?
