I think that often things that aren’t new feel like a chore. Although getting to sleep through the night after having had a newborn never gets old. Just sayin’.

I was thinking about this after reading it earlier… I think that when the idea is new it is full of hope and limitless potential. At the same time, we have not yet invested anything in it. So, there is no cost (yet). It is all upside and no downside at the start. It is not until we get into it and spend resources on it (while also seeing it not become what we wanted) that we start look at the economics of it. You start to ask, “Is this worth it?”

Take the silly example of playing the lottery. Winning $120M sounds so great! You want it. So every week, you go buy and your lottery ticket. About 6 weeks in, you are standing ten people deep in line at some nasty connivence store. These store visits start to feel like a chore. You start to think about all of the other things that you could do with your $10. You start to think about how unlikely it is to actually win $120M. The whole thing looks at a lot different now that it is costing you something and the goal is feeling further away than ever.

Nevertheless, you have to have ideas, try stuff and step out on a limb once in a while if you are ever going to do anything worthwhile.
